Walk and Talk

"Walk and Talk" combines the traditional aspects of therapy with the energising and healing elements of movement and the outdoors. As you walk alongside your psychologist, you will find an environment that fosters openness, self-reflection and positive change.

The rhythmic motion of walking and the peacefulness of nature create a conducive setting for meaningful dialogue, leading to increased self-awareness, resilience and inner peace.

Walk and Talk Therapy is suitable for individuals seeking the same therapeutic support as in-clinic, but in an outdoor space. It offers a supportive space to navigate life's challenges with professional guidance.

Walk-and-talk therapy is offered at Toohey Forest and Enoggerah Reservoir. Appointments are limited. Medicare rebates are available for those with Mental Health Care Plans. Please use the contact button to contact Sunrise Peak Psychology for further information.

Outdoor Therapy Supervision and Training

Nature-Based Therapy | Walk and Talk | Adventure Therapy
Brisbane in person and Australia-wide via Telehealth

Karen Breedon is a Clinical Psychologist and Board Approved Supervisor who provides specialised supervision and training for psychologists who would like support to integrate outdoor and nature-based therapy into their clinical work.

Outdoor therapy requires more than clinical competence. It requires structured risk management, ethical clarity and operational systems that ensure safety, sustainability and clinical integrity.

Karen works with:

  • Psychologists introducing walk-and-talk therapy into private practice
  • Clinicians developing adventure therapy or holiday programs
  • Supervisors overseeing practitioners delivering outdoor work
  • Practices expanding into multidisciplinary, nature-based service models

Supervision and mentorship may include:

  • Assessing clinical suitability for outdoor sessions
  • Environmental and dynamic risk assessment frameworks
  • Informed consent, documentation and insurance considerations
  • Ethical decision-making in non-traditional settings
  • Translating CBT, ACT, DBT and Schema Therapy into outdoor contexts
  • Structuring group-based outdoor programs
  • Developing multi-day therapeutic hikes and retreat models
  • Operational systems for sustainable program delivery

Karen’s approach is grounded in evidence-based psychological models and real-world implementation through Sunrise Peak Psychology and Adventure Therapy in Brisbane. Her supervision integrates clinical rigour with practical application, ensuring outdoor work remains therapeutic rather than recreational.

Outdoor therapy can be deeply impactful when delivered with structure and clear clinical reasoning. Without these foundations, risk increases and therapeutic depth is compromised.

Supervision is available individually or as structured training intensives, either in Brisbane or online across Australia.

Enquiries can be directed to [email protected] with a brief outline of current practice and intended outdoor service model.

Narrative Walks

We currently do not have any Narrative Walks planned for 2026 at this stage - expressions of interest are welcome.

Narrative Walks is an inclusive program that welcomes individuals of all genders and ages. It takes place within the scenic Toohey Forest, specifically along a designated section. The walk begins at the Toohey Forest Picnic Area in Nathan and participants embark on a roughly 5 km journey towards the Mt Gravatt Lookout. At the lookout, we pause to rest, enjoy lunch (supplied), and then proceed to complete the 5 km return route.

The main focus of the walk is to address a specific issue that each participant identifies beforehand.  Throughout the walk, we also explore and develop various skills, such as understanding and managing our thoughts, being fully present in the moment, recognising sources of support, and being aware of our emotions. Additionally, the walk provides an opportunity for physical exercise and a sense of achievement. It's a wonderful experience that allows participants to connect with nature and themselves, fostering personal growth and well-being.
